A new study from the University of Sydney shows that integrating lifestyle support into back pain treatment can significantly reduce disability and improve quality of life for patients. The study found that a six-month program focused on healthy lifestyle changes led to better outcomes compared to traditional physiotherapy care alone.

Their findings, published in JAMA Network Open, demonstrate that this holistic approach can significantly reduce disability and enhance the overall quality of life for patients. \The study involved 346 participants from across Australia, all experiencing chronic low back pain and at least one lifestyle risk factor, including obesity, poor diet, sedentary habits, or smoking. Participants were randomly assigned to either the 'Healthy Lifestyle Program (HeLP)' or standard guideline-based physiotherapy care. The HeLP group received comprehensive support from physiotherapists, dietitians, and telephone health coaches. These professionals worked with participants to identify specific lifestyle habits that might be contributing to their back pain, such as weight, inactivity, poor diet, sleep quality, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption. \Over a six-month period, HeLP participants received evidence-based advice and guidance tailored to address their individual lifestyle challenges. The results were striking: compared to standard care, the HeLP group experienced a reduction in disability, as measured by the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire. Participants in the HeLP group scored an average of 1.3 points lower on this questionnaire, indicating a significant improvement in their ability to function in daily life. Furthermore, HeLP participants lost an average of 1.6 kg more weight than the control group, highlighting the program's effectiveness in promoting healthy lifestyle changes. \These findings challenge conventional views on back pain management, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various health factors. Associate Professor Chris Williams, the study's chief investigator, stressed the importance of considering the whole person when addressing back pain. 'Resolving back pain needs to focus on more than the back. Our bodies are not like machines; we are more like ecosystems where many factors interact and determine how we work and feel. Back pain is no different. So, when someone has back pain that doesn't get better, they should expect comprehensive care about a range of health factors, not just a focus on what's happening in their spine.' He urged clinicians to shift away from solely focusing on medications and procedures and embrace a more holistic approach that addresses lifestyle factors. \Dr. Emma Mudd, the study's lead author and a Senior Research Officer at the University of Sydney, highlighted the real-world impact of the HeLP program. She noted that many individuals with chronic back pain feel neglected and frustrated by the lack of comprehensive support. 'By shifting the focus to include lifestyle changes and providing simple, supportive interventions, patients feel empowered to take control of their pain. This approach not only improves their symptoms but also enhances their overall quality of life.' \The researchers believe that lifestyle-integrated care, such as the HeLP program, holds the potential to benefit patients beyond pain management. They envision a future where this approach becomes a standard component of back pain care, reducing reliance on medications and procedures while promoting long-term health and wellbeing.
