Researchers have successfully deployed a quantum optical circuit utilizing optical fibers to manipulate photons as they traverse through it.

Due to photons’ inherent properties, optical circuits are faster, consume less energy, have a high bandwidth, and are less susceptible to noise.
The key lies in the core and cladding being made of different materials, enabling light to continually reflect and travel long distances with minimal information loss. You might be wondering why this is relevant to programming optical circuits. The answer lies with qudits., is done on two states or levels, hence the name binary systems. For classical systems, this means that the electron can only be in two states , and for quantum systems, the information can be in a superposition of the two states.
This also means the circuit components need to be precisely manufactured and aligned to build the optical circuit. Simply put, we can get the desired output by modifying the light propagating through the fiber. Suppose we have two individuals, Alice and Bob, each with entangled photons. Any alteration to Alice’s photon will correspondingly impact Bob’s photon. Leveraging their programmable optical circuit, the researchers controlled Bob’s photon and observed its influence on Alice’s photon.
