Stepping onto Chestnut Drive is like walking onto the set of a Hollywood Christmas film

This time of year can feel a little bleak. We wake up before the sun has risen and drive home from the office in darkness - only the lights of the cars in front of us to guide the way.

For the past four years, the lights on Chestnut Drive have been a must-see for both locals and those travelling further afield. Some have compared it to the Blackpool Illuminations, others say it’s like something straight out of a Christmas film. This year, Santa and his sleigh were in attendance for the switch-on too, plus the Mayor of Trafford, members of Sale Rotary and a choir belting out festive tunes too.

Her house is decked out to the nines. There’s stars, snowflakes and Christmas trees and if you look up to the first floor one of her cats, Snowball, keeps a miniature Snowman company. In the front yard there’s an inflatable igloo with some friendly penguins keeping watch. It started during Covid as residents decided to put more lights up to provide some respite for the wider community. The charity element came out of this as well and last year saw 497 gifts piled high into seven shopping trolleys which were dropped off at B&M for Mission Christmas.News of the street’s festive celebration has travelled so far that they’ve had visitors come from the Midlands to see them in all their glory.

Looking around the street and the people that have come out tonight, Jennie says it’s all about community. “It gives you a sense of belonging. “Some people say we’re rubbing it in with the Cost of Living or people saying we’re showing off, but it brings joy and because the lights are LED, it really doesn't cost that much,” says another resident.“Personally though I just like hearing the children laughing and going between houses, it’s lovely.”
