From helping smokers quit to endangering our youth: the double-edged sword of vaping in Lincolnshire. What's the real cost?
We need tougher restrictions on the sale of single-use vapes — that's the message Lincolnshire councillors, residents and even vape shops all agree on.
This growing concern was underscored by a troubling incident in Sleaford in March, where three teenagers collapsed on a public street after inhaling a vape device filled with cannabis oil. "That being said, I'm aware of the risks involved unlike a ridiculous amount of young people I see vaping. I don't think it's an awful idea putting more restrictions on vapes like the government has on cigarettes."
As an alternative to single-use products, Lincoln resident George Moore, 24, opts for pod vapes, which he believes are a"lesser evil". "There is now an epidemic amongst teenagers and young people generally in the purchase and use of these single-use items, with all the environmental impacts caused by the waste that single-use items cause.
Recognising the gravity of this issue, 888 Vapour in Lincoln has taken proactive measures. The store has initiated a 'bar bin' system, where individuals can drop off their used vapes for proper disposal.While single-use vapes constitute a large portion of the store's sales, 888 Vapour manager Fraser Alan consistently encourages customers to consider more sustainable alternatives.
County Councillor Wendy Bowkett , executive for adult care and public health, voiced her concerns, saying:"Youth vaping has increased across the country and whilst e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking, they are not risk-free and shouldn't be used by children under 18 or non-smokers."
