A resurgence of line dancing, fueled by social media and its ability to connect people through shared movement, is highlighting the enduring joy and cultural significance of this decades-old tradition within Black communities. From weddings to backyard gatherings, line dancing brings people together, fostering a sense of community and well-being.

When Tamia came across a video on YouTube of people line dancing to her 2006 song “Can’t Get Enough of You,” she and her husband, NBA legend Grant Hill, decided to join in the fun and learn the dance.

“That sense of doing the same steps together, whatever dance it is, creates a sense of holistic well-being,” said April Berry, a master dance instructor in Pittsburgh. “Dancing together bonds us together.” “That sense of being together and moving together as one is really where the joy comes from,” says Berry. “When you talk about Black joy, you talk about being motivated, being lifted out of hard times. That’s why people get together to dance.”Ja’Mai Richardson, left, and Quinton Dais perform a line dance before the crowd arrives at S Bar.

“I wanted to line dance at least once a week to honor her,” said Peterson, 32. “It reawakened a joy in me. It became therapy for me.” The TruKuntry Steppas in Dalzell, South Carolina, indulge in a Western culture that evolved after its founder, Donna Dawson, was inspired by a saddle club’s trail ride and line dancing event.

From left, line dancers Gequana Thomas, Shanna Ford and Tyler Humes. They’ve been dancing with the TruKuntry Steppas for five months, three years and eight months, respectively. “I used to try to act hard,” recalled Wilson, 25. “But I went to the first event and had the time of my life. Everybody was so welcoming. I didn’t even know the dances, but they’d grab me and take me over to the side and teach me.
