Lionesses captain Leah Williamson was photographed beaming as she was presented with an OBE by the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle, recognising her services to football
Lionesses captain Leah Williamson beamed as she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle. The footballer was presented with the OBE, which recognises her services to association football, on Wednesday 4 October.
OBEs are awarded for a distinguished regional or county-wide role in any field, through achievement or service to the community. Leah looked stunning for the event as she donned a grey check blazer with matching trousers. She paired the look with some stylish black shoes and gold earrings. Leah appeared to be beaming as she shook Prince William's hand after he pinned the red bow onto her suit jacket. The footballer was then seen grinning from ear to ear as she posed for a few pictures on the castle grounds. The honour comes after England took home the trophy at the 2022 Euros after beating Germany 2-1 in the final at Wembley. The winning goal scored by Chloe Kelly in extra time meant this was England's first major football win since the men's team won in the 1996 World Cup. Prince William attended the Euro's women's final and gave Lioness captain Leah a hug before she was handed the trophy. Leah told the England team's YouTube channel: "I think I went to shake his hand and he said, 'Leah, bring it in' and I said, 'Thank you sir'. He was like, 'I’m very proud of you all." The dedicated captain said: "The legacy of this tournament is a change in society. We’ve brought people together and got people to this game." Leah continued and said: "What we've done for women and young girls who can look up and aspire to be us. I think England have hosted an incredible tournament and we've changed the game in this country - and hopefully across Europe and across the world." The prince shook hands with most of the squad to show his appreciation for all their work throughout the impressive display of talent throughout the tournament. William also took to Twitter to share his admiration by writing: "Sensational. An incredible win and the whole nation couldn’t be prouder of you all. Wonderful to see history in the making tonight at Wembley, congratulations! What a night! Just brilliant. You’ve inspired a nation too".
