Since then the 26-year-old has managed to start just three games, which came in succession in January and February when Newport County, Wolves and West Ham were beaten, with 11 goals scored. Martinez makes a difference to this team at both ends of the pitch. His muscle injury, added to foot and knee problems already picked up, are turning this season into a write-off for a player who has claims of being Ten Hag's best signing. He is expected to return before the end of the season but he will miss most of the run-in. If United reach the FA Cup final in his absence they will desperately hope he is fit enough to be in the team at Wembley.
