Some school districts and universities in the San Antonio area are taking the day off next month for the final eclipse in the United States until 2044. The total solar eclipse takes place Apr. 8. Texas has a first class seat to view the eclipse as it travels to entire state in roughly 24 minutes. The solar event will also bring a massive amount of tourist traffic to the area, as some expect a million or more people to converge on the Hill Country to catch a glimpse. That brings a huge traffic issue getting kids to and from school.
Dr. John E. Chapman III, superintendent for Comal Independent School District, said they will use a bad weather day in order to cancel school on that day. He said he is primarily concerned about transporting students safely to and from school knowing that there will be an unprecedented level of traffic throughout I-35, Highway 281, Highway 46, and FM 306.
