A phased construction plan for a lithium extraction plant at the former cement works in Eastgate, near Stanhope, County Durham, is expected to be approved. The project aims to supply the battery industry and create hundreds of jobs.
Plans for the phased construction of a lithium extraction plant near Stanhope in County Durham are on the verge of approval. The Weardale Lithium site, situated at the former cement works at Eastgate, will process lithium brine mineral resources extracted from deep groundwaters. Proponents of the project assert that it will cater to the burgeoning battery industry and generate hundreds of jobs throughout its operational lifespan.
The former cement works, which ceased operations in 2002 resulting in the loss of nearly 200 jobs, will be revived through this initiative. Since the initial proposal, the plans have undergone modifications. Although the development itself will be temporary, permanent planning permission is being sought for the pipeline routes that will facilitate the extraction and transportation of lithium. The company spearheading the project stated: 'The scheme will deliver significant economic investment and jobs directly into Weardale as well as supporting long-term growth and development aspirations for the battery industry more widely within the North East region and the UK.'This announcement follows over three years of extensive work in the area, encompassing the trial and evaluation of various technologies to determine the most efficient method for extracting lithium from the geothermal groundwaters
