A cool-climate aficionado has championed a hidden treasure in the Australian wine atlas, writes Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor Des Houghton.
Sheehan would drive 93km from Ballarat to Ararat in Victoria’s Grampians to meet his sweetheart, Jennifer Meithke.
He enrolled in Roseworthy Agricultural College north of Adelaide in 1989 and was among the first intake of students to study a specialist degree in viticulture. Louder was a cellar hand inspired by Mast’s fervour in pioneering cool-climate shiraz on vines grown at 350m above sea level. “I have been around and tasted some of the world’s great wines and I can tell you the Granite Belt does what it does exceedingly well,” he said.
The Granite Belt is also home to some fine examples of viognier, a French variety that dominates at Condrieu, the largest wine appellation in the Northern Rhone.
