As with the lockdown, it was always going to be easier to introduce the government's job retention scheme than withdraw it. The chancellor claims today’s announcement provides a"generous runway to businesses to plan against", and it certainly avoids the cliff-edge so many had worried about. "All schemes will need to be kept under review to help minimise impacts on people’s livelihoods and keep businesses thriving.
"That is why I established this scheme to support these people and their livelihoods at this critical time."Employers to be asked to start sharing salary costs12:36Mr Sunak announces the job retention scheme will be extended for four months until the end of October. The second step will see groups of 10 being able to meet outdoors, team sports training on a non-contact basis in small groups, re-opening of some libraries and open-air museums, as well as indoor activities involving limited contact of less than 10 minutes and with two to four people.
