Officers are at the scene and a bridge has been closed off

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said on Thursday night: "At shortly before 8.40pm this evening two fire engines from Irlam and Stretford fire stations were called to Irlam Locks following reports of a person in the water. Crews are assisting Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to rescue the person."Police and fire service teams descended on the Manchester Ship Canal on Thursday night.A major search took place, well into the night.
