Rescuers were searching for as many as 20 people believed to be in the water early Tuesday, a Baltimore fire department official said.
A major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a freighter, causing part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge to snap and fall into the Patapsco River. Rescue conditions are difficult due to wind, frigid temperatures and murky waters, Kevin Cartwright, the Baltimore Fire Department’s communications director, added. It was not clear how many people were on the bridge when it fell.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he offered federal support to Baltimore authorities. The Maryland Transportation Authority closed Interstate 695 in both directions. Motorists were advised to use I-95 or I-895.
