Meanwhile in the education sector, the Coalition will back the federal government’s plan to cap the number of new overseas students entering Australia in 2025 giving it almost guaranteed certainty it will pass into law. The plan to downsize the $48 billion export sector will bring numbers back to pre-pandemic levels and will attempt to push students into regional universities while savagely cutting those wanting to attend the top world-class universities.
With the Coalition’s backing, the legislation will pass through the Senate without hindrance. Only independent David Van has come out in disagreement with the change, telling the Australian Financial Review “As the legislation currently stands, I cannot in good faith support it”. “It imposes a financial burden on our universities and their research programs, this will limit the soft power effect we get from international students.
