Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas’s armed wing, was killed in Gaza in July, the IDF said. Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran.
The killings of Hamas’s top military commander and political leader, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh, are a significant blow to the militant group, but also one that it could recover from, analysts said. Taken together, they said, the most significant short-term impact was likely the jeopardizing of negotiations to end the war, which were reported to have reached a critical juncture in the days before Haniyeh’s assassination.
By the end of the following year, it had assassinated the group’s founder and Haniyeh’s mentor, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, and then-leader, Abdel Aziz Rantisi.
