WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is expected to plead guilty in a deal with the United States that would free him and send him to Australia. Follow live updates.

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands — With hours to go before Assange is set to appear in court, the quaint island of Saipan appeared to be in an indifferent slumber Tuesday evening: The squeals of roughhousing children echoing across a resort-lined beach as tourists dragged their feet across wet pavement. Heavy rains had temporarily broken up the sun’s blazing heat, and few seemed interested in the historic case that was set to unfold at a courthouse less than two miles away.

Ana, a resident of the island for more than two decades, said he had never heard of Assange. The only time he could think of international news unfolding in Saipan was World War II or unproven theories involving the demise Amelia Earhart, he said. “It’s peaceful here, unlike other places. No politics,” Sta. Ana said. “Most people don’t know that guy,” he added, referring to Assange. He gestured to a stranger waiting at the checkout counter. “Do you know Julian Assange?” he asked.
