Dozens of officers in riot gear removed students from campus with their hands zip-tied behind their backs, as university protests over the Israel-Gaza war escalated.
Cameron Jones, a sophomore at Columbia, said he had been barricaded inside John Jay Hall until about midnight and had watched as about 20 people outside Hamilton Hall — who had locked arms to try to block access to the building — were “violently and aggressively” dragged away. Jones, who has been involved with the student group Jewish Voice for Peace, said he was confused by the assertion from police and university officials that non-students were involved with the protest.
’ It’s unfortunate that the university and mayor’s office spread misinformation about what is actually going on.” The New York Police Department and other city officials had said in a news conference Tuesday that people who are not affiliated with the university were involved in escalating the protests, and that Columbia students were being influenced by people known to police to have a history of disruptive protest activities.
