The Commons is set to vote on an SNP motion for a ceasefire in Gaza, and the Speaker has sparked fury by going against convention and selecting both the government and Labour amendments. It's relief for Sir Keir Starmer, who could have been facing a sizeable rebellion from his MPs.
The shadow foreign secretary, David Lammy, is moving Labour's amendment that calls for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, and also calls for an immediate release of the hostages held by the terror group. The veteran Labour MP told MPs: 'There are times when this House can come together with clarity and unity of purpose, and I hope this can be one of those moments.'Mr Lammy is heckled by Tory MPs as he makes that statement.
Moving to substance, he says there have been 137 days since 'the appalling 7 October massacre', since which 'the killing has gone on'.He says an Israeli ground offensive in the densely-populated area of Rafah would be a 'humanitarian disaster, a moral catastrophe, and a strategic mistake', saying it 'must not happen'.'Labour is saying unequivocally that we need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to end the bloodshed and the suffering,' he declares.
