Richard Hughes has already proven himself to be a sporting director of considerable acumen at Liverpool but a big question remains with just over a week of the transfer window remaining
If Richard Hughes ' grand plan at Liverpool has yet to make itself known this transfer window, at least one part of it is now starting to crystalise. As the club's maiden sporting director between the years of 2016 and 2022, Michael Edwards saw his reputation soar thanks, in part, to his ability to bring in sizable sums for players whose futures were no longer at Anfield.
That figure allowed the club to bring in Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, who are credited as two of the greatest signings of the 21st century on Merseyside and players who will go down as club legends when their time eventually reaches an end at Anfield. The stipulation that stopped Barcelona from signing any Liverpool players for two years after the Coutinho deal was an inspired flourish also from Edwards.
The £22.5m switch to Brentford, with the potential for that figure to swell to £27.5m, looks like a perfect deal for all three parties and it was quite the mark-up for a club who paid around £5m for him just two years ago and handed him as few as eight starts. Clark had scores of clubs lining up to entice him away from Merseyside but the faith and belief shown in his ability and potential by Salzburg boss Pep Lijnders, the former Reds assistant boss who drove the transfer, was key.
Now a £55m Spurs striker, Liverpool have quietly picked up some additional millions for their 2019 negotiation with the Cherries and while Anfield sources always remain tight-lipped on such deals, the figure is thought to sit around the £9m mark.
