Dr Abdel Hammad travelled to Gaza to perform life-saving surgeries
Dr Abdel Hammad, a surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, travelled to the Palestinian city at the start of October to perform life-saving transplants. The surgeon went to the region as a charity volunteer as part of a hospital project, Liverpool International Transplant Initiative , that sends medics to the conflict-hit Gaza Strip.
The recent violence, which began with a bloody and wide-ranging Hamas attack into Israel, has injured over 22,000 people on both sides with “no ceasefire in sight”, according to the United Nations. Dr Hammad arrived in Gaza on Friday, October 6, and had been sheltering since the humanitarian crisis began.
He said: “It was very chaotic. It took about a whole day to get to Rafah and we arrived in Cairo at 4am. It has been four weeks of a terrible situation. I am very pleased to be out. I have a heavy heart for my colleagues in Gaza and my patients in this situation.
