Liverpool were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest at Anfield on Wednesday night, in a match that saw both sides create chances but ultimately struggle to find a decisive goal.
There were dramatic scenes at Anfield on Wednesday night as Liverpool battled to a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest . A first-half strike from Taiwo Awoniyi gave Forest the lead, but Diogo Jota levelled the scores for the Reds after the break. The result leaves both sides looking to build on their recent performances. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was understandably disappointed with the draw, despite acknowledging the difficult nature of the opposition.
'The result didn't reflect at all what happened on the pitch,' he said. 'The best team lost the game. The team that tried to win the game and created chances didn't win as well. In football, you have to be strong at both ends to be a dominant team and mistakes that we made this evening cannot happen.' He went on to highlight the need for his side to be more clinical in front of goal. 'It's happened too often for us this season. It's happened over the last few weeks when we were playing too well. The goal conceded against Bournemouth and against Ipswich as well. We have been punished by our own mistakes.' Forest boss Steve Cooper was understandably delighted with the point his side earned against one of the Premier League's giants. 'When you're 1-0 down against Nottingham Forest it is maybe a lot to ask for a win because they've hardly given away any chances in the recent games that they have played,' he explained. 'That is why I couldn't ask for more from our players. They created so many chances in the second half but to not score from all of those chances was a little disappointing of course.' Cooper also praised his team's resilience and fighting spirit. 'He was also like this at Anfield, but also all season. It isn't just their goalkeeper, but the way they defended and because of that maybe they deserved to not concede a second or third goal because they threw themselves for every ball and cross. They fight with everything they've got and the fans were really loud and helped them a lot. Still, we managed to create more than a few chances to score and that is what pleased me most and maybe, not for the first time this season, we didn't get what we deserved.' The Premier League continues to be a battleground for teams vying for European qualification and survival, with every point proving crucial. Wednesday night's draw keeps both Liverpool and Forest in the hunt for their respective objectives.
