A vintage payslip from 1960 showcases the stark contrast between player salaries in that era and today's astronomical figures.

A Liverpool legend once shared a payslip on social media, highlighting the drastic difference in wages compared to modern football. Liverpool has been home to some of the world's best footballers, including Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Mohamed Salah, Luis Suarez, and Fernando Torres. These figures are even more significant when compared to the era when the old First Division was gaining momentum, with most players needing second or even third jobs to make a decent living.

On X (formerly Twitter), legendary Liverpool striker John Aldridge revealed that he had found a squad payslip from August 1960 and posted a screenshot as proof. This was during Liverpool's time in the Second Division of English football, and it wouldn't be until 1962 that they were promoted to the top flight under Bill Shankly. Unlike the hundreds of thousands seen today, players back then earned £23 a week, equivalent to around £663 in today's money. Some players also received a £4 bonus, adding approximately £115 to their weekly wage if they met certain performance criteria. Coach Bob Paisley, who would later become one of the club's most successful managers, earned £17 (around £490 today), while his successor, Joe Fagan, received £16 (£461) per week. To match Salah's reported £350,000 weekly wage – Liverpool's highest earner – a player in 1960 would have needed to earn around £12,150 each week
