Cases of the infection have more than quadrupled in Merseyside since record began
Record numbers of people were diagnosed with gonorrhoea in Merseyside last year, as medics warn sexual health services are at a “critical point” amid funding cuts and growing demand.
In Merseyside, there were 2,608 diagnoses in 2023, a 5% increase from 2,488 the previous year, and more than four times as many as in 2012 , when regional records began. Cases have been rising over the last decade, before dropping off during the coronavirus lockdowns, only to return to record levels after restrictions lifted.
That’s the equivalent of about one in 670 people in England being diagnosed with gonorrhoea. But in some parts of the country, the risk is far greater. That’s also the highest rate in England, outside of London, where the risk of contracting gonorrhoea is greatest.
