Yuet Ben, a beloved Chinatown institution in Liverpool, has closed its doors after 50 years. Owner Terry Lim, who took over the restaurant in 1992, expressed his sadness at the closure and his struggles to adjust to retirement.
Customers who frequented the Chinatown institution of Yuet Ben have shared their love for the restaurant after its owner spoke of his sadness at its closure. Terry made the difficult decision to close the restaurant in September, and yesterday he told the ECHO he feels 'lost' without the routine his business provided, while he tries to adjust to his life in retirement. Yuet Ben , meaning “honoured guest,” first opened its doors in 1968 on Great George Street in the city centre.
Since 1978, the restaurant has stood on Upper Duke Street and Shandong-born founder Yuh Ho Yau's unique style of northern Chinese cuisine is still served there. Since 1992, the business has been run by Yuh’s daughter Theresa and her husband Terry Lim, who was taught the trade by his father-in-law as a waiter decades ago. Reflecting upon the closure of the restaurant three months on, Terry wanted to say an emotional farewell to his loyal customers. Speaking to the ECHO he said: 'It was with reluctance that I finally closed the Yuet Ben. Physically and mentally exhausted after the last couple of challenging years, post COVID. The lockdown period ruined my original retirement plans.' He added: 'I have not worked since September 1st and I still cannot get rid of the feeling that I don’t have to work anymore. I feel lost and have not adjusted my life accordingly. I feel really sad and sorry for putting an end to the oldest Chinese restaurant in Liverpool.' His heartfelt message prompted a flurry of online support from customers, who took to the Liverpool ECHO's Facebook page to share their memories of the restaurant. Nevaeh Stone said: 'You've done amazingly, thank you for all the years you gave our city of Liverpool. It has been an honour celebrating your restaurant every Chinese New Year. It's your time now to live your life. I personally wish you a lovely retirement - finally spend your time on you and your loved ones.' Sophie Mikwanda said: 'What a shame. Fifty years is a long time'
