This article recounts a Valentine's Day date spent at Queens Bistro and Wine Bar on Liverpool's picturesque Queens Avenue. Described as a charmingly romantic alley, Queens Avenue offers a unique ambiance with its Georgian architecture, quaint shops, and warm street lighting. The author details the restaurant's cozy atmosphere, delectable food, and exceptional service, culminating in a memorable dining experience.

Liverpool 's Queens Avenue is arguably the most attractive street in the city. The compact alley, located just off Castle Street, is a gorgeous stamped-in-time postcard that many call our very own Diagon Alley. Queens Avenue boasts gorgeous Georgian architecture, old-fashioned shopfronts, ornate lamp posts, and unique independent businesses.

At night, what should be a dark, intimidating alley because of its towering neighbours becomes a dreamy getaway of warm flickering lights and cosy outdoor drinking. You'd be hard pressed to find a poor photo of the street. I don't believe any exist. For years I've wanted to spend a quiet evening lounging in the alley's sole restaurant, Queens Bistro and Wine Bar. Last night, I did just that. My boyfriend and I agreed to spend our Valentine's Day date well in advance of February 14. So, we finally took the plunge and decided to give Liverpool's most romantic street a shot. I'm not sure if we were more excited about the food, the wine or the street. We arrived early evening to Queens Bistro to find a quiet venue. Luckily, we were given a table in the bay window surrounded by pillows and facing the street. I was obsessed. I got cosy, basked in my beautiful new backdrop, and admired the surroundings. The restaurant opts for pine green and cream colours, with wooden furniture, a semi-open kitchen, and a spacious layout. A full venue would feel filled with life rather than noisy and overbearing. Stylish art in large frames acts as decor in an otherwise charmingly rustic venue. The scene was like something out of a film. The warm light of the street flickered in through the window behind me lighting the table. The dark, moody restaurant kept things balanced on the other side. From the gorgeous Georgian aesthetic outdoors to the stylish Parisian interiors, everything was dreamy. A few of the mains caught my eye, specifically the lamb shoulder, but the selection of small plates was more than enough to keep me satisfied. We ordered the house focaccia with whipped butter; marinated mixed olives; charcuterie and pickles; squid in chilli and ginger butter and white wine; tenderstem broccoli; and fries. A bottle of orange wine was delivered and poured while we chatted over nothing. The wait for our first plates was no longer than a few moments but any silences were filled with delightful chatter from the staff tending to our table. The term 'delightful' could be replaced with 'friendly', 'attentive', or 'chatty'. Given the cosy quarters of the venue, we found ourselves talking more than normal with the team, which was very welcome. However, I would like to issue an apology to the waitress who I lied to about my job - I didn't want any special treatment! Before long our table was filled with aromatic dishes lit by a faux flickering candle. You could smell the chilli from the squid and the warm bread wafting through the air. We tucked in, and to no surprise, everything was delicious. The focaccia was thick and fluffy with an unusually sweet crust. Paired with a chilli butter spread, it disappeared quickly. The charcuterie, broccoli and fries were generously portioned, so there was no fighting over the last forkfuls. The squid was the star of the evening - perfectly cooked before venturing into a rubbery texture and swimming in mouthwatering chilli, white wine, and lemon flavours. I've never looked at a dessert menu and fancied everything on it. With the absence of an obligatory chocolate dish, the choices are representative of the venue and not an attempt to appeal to every palate. Ironically, I opted for something I have historically never liked. I haven't eaten pear since I was six years old. I didn't like it then and not once in the past two decades has it found its way back to my plate. However, with blind faith in Queens to continue delivering on quality, I ordered a sticky toffee pudding with poached pear and butterscotch sauce. Thankfully, my disliking has been quelled and I enjoyed the dessert, for what it was worth. I wasn't able to finish it all as it was quite a hefty conclusion despite its size. I was stuffed and more than satisfied. My partner ordered the lime tapioca and asked for a scoop of the coconut sorbet listed elsewhere on the dessert menu as an addition. This wasn't a service test - he's just an annoying customer. After a reassuring 'no problem' from our waiter, the bespoke dessert was delivered exactly how he asked. This was the cherry on top of a phenomenal experience. The date was nothing extraordinary in terms of planning. It was simply a nice, affordable dinner. However, the setting of both Queens Avenue and its sole restaurant catapults the experience into the stratosphere. I was in love the moment I arrived. If you are yet to venture through Queens Avenue I beg you to do so. Even if it's just for a quick snoop, you won't regret it. However, if you're willing to brave the rush, there's no better place for Valentine's Da
