Liverpool Women's extensive pursuit of a striker came to an end this week with the acquisition of the highly-rated Sophie Roman Haug from AS Roma.
Goals, however, were not easy to come by. Liverpool found the back of the net just 24 times in their 22 league games. Only West Ham, Leicester and relegated Reading scored less and - with the Reds surely striving to better last season's seventh-place finish this term - the need for more attacking firepower was pressing.
And, though Liverpool's opening day trip to Arsenal at the Emirates is now just three weeks away, Stengel hasn't yet featured for the Reds in pre-season. The 31-year-old was permitted to join National Women’s Soccer League side NJ/NY Gotham FC on loan during the WSL off-season, scoring twice in four appearances for the American outfit.
While the likes of United and Chelsea can entice players with the lure of Champions League football, Liverpool must instead convince potential new signings to buy into a more long-term project at Prenton Park. Only the top three sides in the WSL win European qualification, and disrupting the league's conventional Big Four is no mean feat.
"I feel like it was the right next step for me. I got a really good impression of the club and I believe they're building something big here and I would really like to be a part of it," Roman Haug said after putting pen to paper on her Liverpool deal.
