Cody Gakpo has recalled why he rejected an initial move to the Premier League the summer before his £35m switch to Liverpool
The Netherlands international might have enjoyed a successful mid-season World Cup, scoring three goals as his nation suffered a quarter-final exit to eventual winners Argentina, but, despite links starting to emerge it was still relatively unexpected for the Reds to move for the PSV Eindhoven left-winger.
And he’s now revealed how a hat-trick against scored FC Volendam in what would have been his final claim for the Eredivisie club bizarrely ended up deciding his future. “If I scored once, I would go to Southampton. If I scored twice I would go to Leeds and if I scored three I would stay at PSV. "I was sitting next to one of my close friends Jordan Teze," Gakpo says. "He said: 'It's in God's hands if he decides it's an own goal or not.' And at the end, it was my goal, so then it was three. I couldn't have got a clearer sign."
