Manchester United and Liverpool fans react with mixed emotions to the appointment of Michael Oliver as referee for their upcoming Premier League clash. Oliver has been involved in several controversial decisions involving both teams in recent seasons.
Manchester United supporters are up in arms at the appointment of Michael Oliver as referee for the blockbusting Premier League showdown at Liverpool on Sunday. But Reds fans have good reason to be just as wary of the whistle-blower. On the news Oliver will take charge of the fixture, United followers were quick to point to a number of decisions that have gone against their side when the Northumberland referee has been part of the officiating team.
The most recent came earlier this season when Oliver was on VAR duty for United's Premier League game at West Ham United and encouraged the award of a controversial late penalty that sent the visitors tumbling to a 2-1 defeat, after which Erik ten Hag was sacked the following day. United loyalists were also unhappy with Oliver's decision to send off Diogo Dalot for two yellow cards during the closing stages of the goalless Premier League draw at Anfield last season. He has subsequently taken charge of just one United match. Liverpool, though, could point to Oliver being on duty when Jeremy Doku's injury-time challenge on Alexis Mac Allister went unpunished during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield last season, while the referee reportedly apologised to then Reds boss Jurgen Klopp for a series of mistakes during a controversial 3-2 loss at Arsenal in October 2022. He was also the man in the middle for Arne Slot's only defeat as a head coach in 2024, Liverpool's 1-0 home Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest in September. And the omens also favour United. This will be the seventh time Oliver has been the referee for the fixture between the bitter North West rivals, with Liverpool having won only one of the previous six
