Jarell Quansah reflects on learning from playing alongside Virgil van Dijk and earning his place in the Liverpool first team
When Liverpool last returned to training following an international break, Jurgen Klopp made his feelings on breakout star Jarell Quansah perfectly clear.
Surprisingly, Quansah was yet to play competitively alongside Virgil van Dijk back in November. But now the pair have made 13 appearances together, selected as Klopp’s starting centre-back partnership on 10 occasions, with it a sign of his increased prominence in recent months. “Probably in the game you just listen to what he’s saying and doing what you’re told, but after the game you reflect on what he’s said and why he’s saying it. When you do analysis after the game you can watch it back and remember things he’s told you to do and you look at it back and realise why.
Quansah had started Liverpool's last four matches before the March international break, but with Ibrahima Konate back from injury, it would not be a surprise if he dropped to the bench against Brighton. “I probably haven’t had a pinch myself moment. For me it’s all about playing football, it’s what I’ve been doing since I was five so it’s nothing new for me.
“When you’re younger you have all these aspirations, sometimes stupid aspirations of being the best player in the world. I think just being able to be in the position I’m in at the minute and learn from some of the best managers and players in the world hopefully puts me in good stead for the future.
And while he went into the summer expected to depart on loan once again, it soon became clear he would remain part of Klopp’s first team plans. And given the German is departing as manager at the end of the season, Quansah is even more grateful for how pre-season turned out.
