'If you find the right side of social media for you, then it is great' Poppy Williams, 17, tells PMGallagher1 about her struggle with severe acne, why antibiotics were only ever a temporary fix and how skin positivity on social media transformed her o...

“I was about 11 when I started getting acne. I had just started high school. I didn’t think about it too much until I started getting it really severely on my face and body, and it started to hurt.

The drugs didn’t really do anything for the actual acne. It cleared it for as long as your body allows it, but then it comes back with a vengeance. That was the case for me when I came off the antibiotic in 2020, just before Covid, and it came back like crazy. It was cystic acne [a type of inflammatory acne that causes painful, pus-filled pimples to form deep under the skin] by this stage.

When I started my own research, I was finding out a lot about skincare. I found out so much about your skin barrier and how strong it needs to be, and what skin care would work best for my skin. In 2021, I started delving into skin positivity on Instagram and discovered a massive community out there., actually. It’s a community of people posting about their acne and people sharing their stories in a really positive light. I’d never seen anything like that before; it was amazing.

I’ve also worked with the British Skin Foundation on a campaign. They are the official charity for skin, essentially, and cover things which all people have – they normalise it. They play a really vital part in making sure people are educated about these things as well. At the end of 2021, I went back on my antibiotic as a last resort. That cleared my skin, but deep down I knew this was another temporary fix, so we contacted the dermatologist through the NHS. I’d already been on the dermatology waiting list for a year before that, but as it was such a long wait, we contacted them again to try and follow up on it.
