'I looked like a skeleton. I used to rate the pain 100 out of 10. It was unimaginable' Kharina Kharran needed 38 operations when her Crohn’s disease escalated out of control. She talked to PMGallagher1 about coping with the condition ⤵️
‘I looked like a skeleton. I used to rate the pain 100 out of 10. It was unimaginable. But life is calm now. I’m definitely through the worst’
The tummy pains I was hiding began to get worse. I was finding food hard work and felt tired more than usual. With ulcerative colitis, the area affected is the large bowel/colon only. With Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be anywhere from your mouth to rectum. I had the disease through my whole tract. It was excruciating and really took over my life.
I still worked and was able to do fitness things, but I’d really struggle with everything. I’d become exhausted quicker, be losing blood in my stools, and high levels of mucus, fevers, cramps, vomiting and just really poorly. It was a lengthy operation that was high-risk due to my given state, lowered immune system, and amount of blood I lost. I survived the surgery and I can’t praise Kings College Hospital enough. When looking back, I don’t know how I actually did it.
I was working at the time for a financial company in Brighton and had had a year of working standing up. I just couldn’t sit down. There’s no cure for Crohn’s, so getting more money for research is vital. Now though, my life is calm and just how I had always envisioned it to be. I had to learn to walk again after I had my bowel removed as I was bedridden for a long time.
