He is likely to ask her difficult questions and could put her on the spot over whether she intends to keep the pension triple lock – a key manifesto pledge which Downing Street yesterday failed to confirm would be honoured. Steve Double, Tory MP for St Austell and Newquay, became the sixth MP to publicly call for Ms Truss to stand down. He said the PM’s position was “increasingly untenable” – and that she will most likely have to “consider her position” soon.
He told Times Radio: “I think her position is becoming increasingly untenable. We’ve seen a complete reversal of just about everything she stood for in her leadership election campaign.” The MP added: “I think it’s becoming abundantly clear when you look at the loss of confidence in her as prime minister from the general public, and increasingly I think the loss of confidence in her from the parliamentary party, that we are going to get to the point where she really does have to consider her position and for the good of the country, step aside, and I think we will probably come to that place quite soon.
