Tuesday's front page: Tensions in Truss camp over cost of living help TomorrowsPapersToday Latest by HugoGye ChaplainChloe:
The next chancellor should prioritise the poorest households and rely on existing mechanisms such as universal credit, pension credit and council tax rather than trying to “reinvent the wheel” by coming up with new schemes, Mr Javid added.
“She’s willing to do more to help people but her focus is around doing it in a way that puts more money in people’s pockets, creating a high-growth economy with higher wages, more people in work.” Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Conservative leader, rejected the claim of divisions in the Truss camp, saying: “This is a bit confected. Rishi’s team must be desperate to try this.”
“I’m very clear about what is required to help people, and as soon as we know how much bills will go up by, I will act.” A Truss campaign source said: “Yet again this poll shows Liz’s bold economic plan and optimistic vision for the UK is cutting through with voters across the country. Liz is the only candidate that can beat Sir Keir Starmer at the next election – vote Rishi, get Labour.”
