Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister after just 44 days.
In a statement outside Downing Street today, she said that she has spoken to the King and resigned as the leader of the Conservative Party. She said there will be a contest and there will be a new leader chosen in a contest and a new Prime Minister within a week.However she said she “accepted” she was “unable to deliver” the manifesto she stood on in the leadership contest.
Tory MPs had called publicly for her to resign sending letters of no confidence to the chair of the 1922 backbenchers committee.
