Liz Truss has promised to keep pushing her free-market ideas for the economy from the back benches – but it is hercarries little economic credibility in the eyes of the public, given the failure of her tax-cutting “mini Budget” and the brief duration of her tenure in No 10.

So her first speech since leaving office, at a meeting of international parliamentarians in Tokyo today, will attract attention from around the world., in effect working on the presumption that Beijing is already heading the same way as Moscow. She drew a direct line between the two powers and called on the West to protect Taiwan now, lest it go the same way as Ukraine.

No major Western country has formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, instead observing the “one China” policy which states that Beijing and Taipei have mutually incompatible territorial claims. Ms Truss suggested that this should be reassessed, saying: “Many countries have limited diplomatic and ministerial ties to Taiwan due to agreements negotiated with China. The world has changed since then and some of these arrangements are being rethought.
