Kwasi Kwarteng, James Cleverly and Thérèse Coffey lined up for top jobs while Priti Patel becomes first senior minister to confirm she will return to the back benches
Polls suggest the new prime minister – Britain’s third female premier – may have an uphill battle in winning over the public, with most voters sceptical that she will be able to fix the growing cost of living crisis.
Speaking after the result was declared, Ms Truss paid tribute to Mr Johnson and told him: “You got Brexit done, you crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the vaccine, and you stood up to Vladimir Putin. You are admired from Kyiv to Carlisle.” After returning from Balmoral, where the Queen is currently based because of her mobility problems, Ms Truss will make a speech in Downing Street, either on the steps of No 10 or inside the building if the weather is too bad to stand outside.
Ms Truss’s close friend Thérèse Coffey, currently Work and Pensions Secretary, is set to be the new health secretary and may also serve as deputy prime minister. She will declare herself a “fixer” who can deliver on “fixing the NHS” with a new post-pandemic plan, according to Whitehall sources.
