Staff have been told the term 'widow' should be avoided

Lloyds Banking Group, one of Britain’s biggest employers, has canvassed workers on the tricky question of ‘inclusive language’ ? Will any common saying that references birds, dogs, cats, wild geese, elephants or even sardines be proscribed for fear of causing offence to animal lovers or vegetarians? Nail on the head? Too violent. Bite the bullet? No way.

It is entirely appropriate that Lloyds, a company which prides itself on its workplace ethics, should, given the rapidly shifting cultural mores, explore what is, and isn’t, acceptable in an office environment. A grown-up company should be able to have a grown-up discussion about a touchstone subject like this. The difficulty comes, however, with the execution of an undertaking like this, and the impression it gives of wokery gone too far.
