Calderdale Council has abandoned plans to swap car parking spaces with cycle lanes on the A646 in Hebden Bridge after facing significant local opposition. The council has opted to prioritize parking needs while addressing concerns about road safety and congestion.
Calderdale Council has reversed its plans to replace car parking spaces on the A646 with dedicated cycle lanes. The council announced that it had listened to local concerns and decided to prioritize parking needs while still addressing concerns about road safety and traffic congestion. Originally, a £5 million A646 Corridor Improvement Programme was proposed to enhance road safety , journey times, air quality, and pedestrian and cycling facilities.
The plan included removing parking spaces between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, widening a shared-use path, and installing a westbound cycle lane. However, these plans sparked opposition from local residents and businesses who argued that removing parking would negatively impact their livelihoods. In response to the backlash, the council has now opted for a different approach. Double yellow lines will be introduced at a narrower section of the road and opposite westbound bus stops. Parking will be formalized in other areas, meaning charges will be implemented. The council believes this will help control parking, improve safety by creating designated parking bays, and encourage long-stay parking. This, they hope, will alleviate pressure on the town center and support short-stay parking needs. While a formal consultation will follow, the council states that the decision was made based on feedback from the community. Scott Borrows, owner of a hardware store in Hebden Bridge, expressed concerns about the initial plans, stating that while walking is encouraged, people still need to transport larger items purchased at local businesses. He highlighted the importance of accessible parking for these needs
