The Australian billionaire is determined to open coal mine that is “not in the public interest”
After a campaign that wouldn't look out of place during the US elections, Australian mining billionaire Gina Rinehart won over a local community that voted in support of a proposed metallurgical coal mine in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The project is led by Northback Holdings , a subsidiary of Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting. The company has been attempting to revive coal mining in the area, where the last mine closed in 1983, for about a decade.
Additionally, it looks like the Crowsnest Pass municipality would have a vested interest in the mine being developed. Crowsnest Headwaters, a local advocacy group, discovered through access to information requests that the Crowsnest Pass council approved a temporary transfer of water license to Riversdale Resources, now Northback, for $1.2 million in 2017. The advocacy group accuses the municipality of secretly doing deals with the miners.
