The Tories are resigned to a dire night ahead, while the mood in the Labour camp is buoyantWith seven out of 10 people in England eligible to vote, this is the biggest electoral test before the general election.
The other is whether the Liberal Democrats can smash the Tories' blue wall in the leafy shires of Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Surrey. He'll need a swing of 11.8%. One strategist tells me that by the morning they think they will be able to argue that the party is on its way to forming the next government and that this is by far the best performance since Sir Keir became leader in 2020. The results will supply vital clues about whether Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party are on track to end 13 years of Conservative governments, or whether they will miss out again.
"Across the country, votes were cast throughout the day and in line with the law," the electoral commission said. The Electoral Commission said work had commenced to understand the impact of the new photographic ID requirement.
