Frontwoman Hannah Reid has a knack for the searingly diaristic, but without the soundtrack to match, this new album is a damp squib

There is nothing scarier than a polite person losing their cool and that is the energy rippling through the electro-pop trio London Grammar’s fourth album,“You’re at the bar with my boyfriend behind my back/You’ll say that you were bonding over your panic attacks,” coos frontwoman Hannah Reid on single “Fakest Bitch” – a quietly groovy revenge ballad which, in terms of take-no-prisoners oomph, is up there...

Mannered yet stormy, London Grammar have long sounded like a furious row at a dinner party. They double down on that sensibility here, though with generally underwhelming results. Reid, who got married andin the three years since the group’s last LP, says that entering her thirties has given her a fresh perspective on life and its challenges.

Elsewhere, tunes meander along even as the singer unleashes her brutally confessional couplets. Hurricane-strength lyrics deserve a soundtrack to match. But for all the sparks thrown up by the wordplay, in the end,Book Reviews
