Think tank New London Architecture has found 583 buildings with 20 or more floors 'queuing up in the pipeline' to be constructed in the capital's already crowded skyline.
London is set to become 'Manhattan-on-Thames' as it gets up to 600 new skyscrapers in the next decade, more than double the number built in the last ten years, a new report suggests.
It also found that of all the city's skyscrapers, the Shard is the favourite of Londoners, having taken over from the Gherkin in recent years. The Shard also remains the city's tallest building at more than 300 metres. While standard residential construction has slowed, the report says that demand for high-rise student accommodation across the city has increased.
According to the Evening Standard, the authors say the rise of skyscrapers began under London Mayor Ken Livingstone and has continued under his successors Boris Johnson and Sadiq Khan. It says the number of workers in the City has risen since the pandemic and that demand for high quality office space is high.
