The £325m restoration of Manchester Town Hall is the biggest heritage project currently under way in the UK

The team tasked with restoring the Houses of Parliament visited Manchester Town Hall today to learn lessons from its 'spiritual cousin'. The delegation came from London to gain insight from the Our Town Hall project.

Underneath it, specialist workers are carrying out the painstaking task of restoring every aspect of the Victorian neo-gothic building. The project set to finish by 2024 is the biggest heritage project currently under way in the UK.The delegation was given a flavour of the extensive works, including a visit to the roof level where around 140,000 tiles are being replaced, and to the Great Hall where the restoration of the ceilings and leaded windows is now done.

The two Victorian neo-gothic buildings are so similar that the interior of the town hall has frequently been used as a ‘double’ for Houses of Parliament in films and TV dramas. Andy Haynes, who is the commercial director of the Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Delivery Authority, described Manchester Town Hall as the 'spiritual cousin' of the Palace of Westminster.
