Findings show older people who are chronically lonely are at a significantly higher risk of suffering from the serious condition.
A new study has issued a stark warning that social isolation can increase the chances of a serious heart condition in the elderly.
"Especially when experienced chronically, our study suggests loneliness may play an important role in stroke incidence, which is already one of the leading causes of long-term disability and mortality worldwide." Top Health Stories Today During the 2006 to 2018 follow-up period, out of the individuals who had their loneliness measured at the beginning only, there were 1,237 strokes recorded. For those who were assessed for loneliness twice over time, 601 strokes were reported during the same follow-up timeframe.
Analysis of participants deemed lonely at the initial measurement indicated they had a 25 per cent elevated risk of experiencing a stroke than those not characterised as lonely. Dr Soh commented: "Repeat assessments of loneliness may help identify those who are chronically lonely and are therefore at a higher risk for stroke. If we fail to address their feelings of loneliness, on a micro and macro scale, there could be profound health consequences."
