Lonely Planet names Manchester as one of world's must-visit 2023 travel destinations

Manchester has been named by global travel guide Lonely Planet as a top world destination for 2023 - the only UK city to feature in the prestigious annual list. The city made the cut as one of 30 must-visit locations.

The citation, in full, reads: "Along with being an accessibility-friendly destination that's also doing a lot for sustainability, Manchester has some exciting things happening in 2023. There are five categories in the guide - eat, journey, unwind, connect and learn, with Manchester featuring in the 'learn' section, together with New Mexico, Marseille, Dresden, El Salvador and South Scotland.Manchester also received the accolade in 2016 on the back of the reopening of the Whitworth art gallery and the opening of HOME in 2015, as well as the reopening of Manchester Central Library in 2014.

Each year, Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2023 lists start with nominations from it's vast community of staff, writers, bloggers, publishing partners and more. The nominations are whittled down by a panel of travel experts to just 30 destinations. "When Lonely Planet says there is something for everyone here, it’s the result of long-term planning and partnership. We're proud to be the only UK city on this list."
