How far will £20 take me in Eccles, and how far will it take me in Didsbury?

The region has a wealth of bars, historical watering holes, ale trails, and fantastic nightlife across the boroughs, and visitors looking for a pub crawl can be spoilt for choice. But sometimes the luxury of choice comes at a cost.

To see the comparison between the two, I embarked on two tram journeys - one to Salford and the other to south Manchester - armed with a crisp £20 note.I started at Eccles, a pub crawl that consists of 15 drinking establishments stretched across - you guessed it - a mile, I came off the tram at Regent Street, I decided to start my journey at the Lamb Hotel after landlady Andrea Lythgoe’s pleas to be the starting point of the mile.

Ordering a similar percentage beer of a 4.6% Stella Artois, for the price of £3.69, I was able to move onto the next pub only spending £6.19. With a fair amount of change left in my pocket, I continued to the next pub on the mile, the Old Bull’s Head. The third pub on the journey, stands proudly at the bottom of Church Street, you walk into yet another Holt brewery owned pub.

I decided to stay on course with a 4.5% pint choice, opting for Birra Moretti, the £3.65 pint took the total up to £13.59, there was no shock as to why this mile has become so popular. Over a third of the 15 pub crawl completed, the next stop was the Oddfellows Arms. Here, the guests are offered pool and darts boards. And it was slowly filling up.

Beyond here, the following pubs on the mile include: Station Bar, on Church Street, The Duke of York, the Dog and Partridge, the Spinner’s Arms, Bird In Hand, Wangies, Stanley Arms and the Bridgewater on Liverpool Road. And this proved to be a contributing factor, as I travelled to Didsbury village, to see how far £20 would last throughout the challenge of the ‘Dozen’. With the impressive benchmark set by the Eccles Mile, it was going to seem a harder task.

This change in pricing was once again explained by Sean O’Mahoney, as he said: “People in the surrounding neighbourhood are of slightly higher income, as the housing around the area are of slightly higher pricing.
