Andrew Hastie took a swipe at Mark McGowan as he held a press conference unveiling the opposition's response to the defence strategic review, saying the Western Australia Premier 'should know after last week that loose lips sink ships'.

Mr McGowan during a trade mission to China said Mr Hastie had"swallowed some sort of Cold War pills" at birth and"couldn't get out of that mindset".

As previously flagged by Defence Minister Richard Marles, the DSR called for Australia's defence to focus on force projection and long-range missile capabilities. Mr Hastie was later asked in his press conference whether Western Australia should be building and hosting long-range missiles. "There is huge opportunity for education, for businesses, for the development of a supply chain here in Western Australia and he's playing silent on these issues.
