Two women who looted during the Hull riots, claiming they thought it was acceptable because 'everyone else was doing it', narrowly avoided prison sentences.
Two women who looted Crocs and bath bombs from high street shops during summer riots in Hull narrowly avoided jail sentences. Elizabete Zvirgzdina and Lucy Houghton, both aged 19, were caught on camera grinning as they showcased their stolen goods. Zvirgzdina admitted to stealing multiple products from Lush, attempting to steal from O2, and possessing cannabis. Houghton confessed to handling stolen goods, specifically the Crocs that were left outside Shoezone after a raid.
Both women claimed they thought it was acceptable to loot because 'everyone else was doing it'. Zvirgzdina, who was caught on CCTV entering an O2 shop through a smashed window, told police she had consumed five to seven vodka and Cokes before joining a protest. She admitted to entering the store 'for 30 seconds' and claimed she 'recorded it on TikTok Live'. The court heard that Zvirgzdina and Houghton were not involved in the earlier violent disorder that saw police officers injured and racial minorities verbally abused. However, Judge Mark Bury, who imposed suspended sentences on both women, highlighted the lasting impact of the riots on the city. He emphasized that while they were not involved in the initial violence, their actions of looting contributed to the disruption and damage. Zvirgzdina received an eight-month suspended prison sentence and 12 days' rehabilitation. Houghton was sentenced to 40 hours of unpaid work and 15 days' rehabilitation. The judge expressed that their actions were 'stupid' but acknowledged their remorse and the fact that they were not involved in the initial violence
