One member of the public thought she had tried to strangle Eddy the cockerel and had hit him with a boat fender, leaving the bird unconscious
A woman who inflicted brain injuries on a cockerel which kept waking her up has been fined more than £1,200.
Smith admitted causing unnecessary suffering but says she never meant to injure the bird, adding: “I could have killed it if I wanted to." Believing the issue would have been sorted upon her return from holiday, Smith was enraged to again be woken up early the following morning. She left her boat and reached into the bird’s cage on top of Ms Carroll’s, eventually managing to grab hold of it.
When interviewed by the RSPCA, Smith, 52, said she came from a farming family and had worked in a pet shop as well as keeping chicken for 30 years so knew about animals. She said cockerels are not allowed at that mooring, and that she had not slept properly in six months because of other noise complaints there.
After examining Eddy, a vet found blood around the bird’s nostrils. He reported that the cockerel was displaying clinical signs - including being wobbly - consistent with having sustained a brain injury, either via head trauma or via oxygen deprivation by asphyxiation, perhaps following an attempt to dislocate the bird’s neck.
