Dramatic images show a lorry wedged beneath a railway bridge inEmergency crews and specialist engineers were scrambled to Balgreen Road after the vehicle struck the bridge on the main Edinburgh to Glasgowat around 4.50pm on May 20. Train services through the area were immediately suspended while Network Rail carried out urgent inspections to assess whether the bridge had suffered structural damage. Passengers travelling through Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley were warned to expect major disruption.
Traffic chaos also hit surrounding roads after Balgreen Road was closed beneath the rail and tram bridge due to the over-height vehicle. Edinburgh Travel News warned motorists to expect lengthy delays across nearby routes. The Edinburgh to Glasgow main line at Haymarket reopened just after 5.30pm. Operators now working to get services moving again.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: “We’re responding to reports of a lorry striking a bridge on the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line near Haymarket station.
“Train services have been stopped to allow us to inspect the structure for damage. We’ll share another update soon. ” Engineers remained at the scene on Wednesday evening as inspections continued. There have been no reports of injuries.
